Shelbi Fowler, LCMT
Chiropractic Assistant $ Massage Therapist
Joined Progressive Chiropractic in 2014
Shelbi was drawn into the holistic healthcare field after experiencing the loss of someone very close to her. After concluding that nutrition, stress-management, and lifestyle changes could have prevented this loss, she decided to be an advocate for healthier living and pursued a career in Massage Therapy. Shelbi graduated in January of 2010 from the Soma National School of Clinical Massage Therapy. After a year in practice, she decided to return to Soma to attend the Master program, where she acquired more clinical skills to better care for her patients. After more than four years practicing massage, Shelbi has been able to work with a wide variety of people in a wide variety of settings including: Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago at Northwestern, chiropractic offices, spas, The Chicago Marathon, and TPAN’s Ride for AIDS Chicago. She really enjoys not only performing massage, but also providing various physical therapy techniques as a part of the rehabilitation process, to ensure that our patients are given the tools to promote their own healing process.
Alongside the doctors at Progressive Chiropractic Wellness Center, Shelbi works directly with patients to create and implement customized treatment plans using a wide variety of techniques. She teaches therapeutic exercise including McKenzie Method and Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization to decrease pain, accelerate healing, and increase performance. These specialized exercises are designed to improve strength & flexibility, promote spinal & joint stability, and retrain faulty breathing and movement patterns. She also utilizes our other therapeutic physical therapy technologies including: ultrasound, cold laser therapy, electrical muscle stimulation, spinal decompression and traction, and myofascial therapies (Graston, Active Release Technique – ART, Trigger Point Therapy, etc.) to help accelerate the rehabilitation process.
As a massage therapist, Shelbi utilizes conventional treatments including trigger point therapy and deep tissue massage, but she specializes in bodywork that taps into the function of the nervous system to bring about pain relief and create global changes in the body. These techniques, while highly specific and effective, tend to feel gentler to patients. She is proficient in Neuromuscular Therapy, NeuroKinetic Therapy, Positional Release Therapy, Myofascial Release, Cranial Sacral Therapy, and tends to use a combination of all of these tools to evaluate dysfunction from a holistic approach to help patients meet their goals of pain relief, improved performance, and wellness.
Outside of the office, Shelbi is interested in biking around town and exploring Chicago, traveling, reading, seeing live music, and animals. Her personal ambitions are tailored around creating a greener and simpler lifestyle for her and her loved ones. She makes all of her own bathing supplies, laundry, and cleaning supplies by hand from organic, edible materials. She also enjoys writing, and storytelling.
